6.4/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Kaiser of California remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like historical epics that feel a little bit like a fever dream, you might get a kick out of The Kaiser of California. It’s not a breezy watch, though. If you’re looking for a tight, modern script, you’re going to hate it. This is for people who enjoy watching a character get absolutely crushed by their own ego in black and white.
Luis Trenker really goes for it here. He plays the lead with this intense, slightly manic energy that feels like he’s trying to drag the whole movie across the finish line by himself.
There’s a strange weight to the scenes set in the wilderness. It doesn't look like the polished westerns you see coming out of Hollywood from that same era. It feels gritty, maybe a bit desperate. At times, the pacing drags so much you can almost hear the camera whirring, but then you get these sudden, sharp moments of pure chaos.
Watching this made me think about The Boundary Rider, just because of that same weird obsession with vast, empty landscapes. Though, let’s be real, this movie takes itself way more seriously than a lot of the stuff I usually watch, like the slapstick in Going Bye-Bye! which is a totally different kind of headache.
There is this one scene where he’s just staring off into the horizon, and it goes on for, like, three times longer than it should. It stops being emotional and starts being funny, but maybe that’s just me. I couldn't help but wonder if the editor just fell asleep at the desk. 😴
The whole thing feels like a stage play that escaped into the mountains. It’s not perfect. It’s not even close. But it’s got this weirdly earnest heart that makes you forgive the fact that half the extras look like they’re just waiting for lunch. It’s a messy portrait of an obsession, and honestly? I kind of respect the ambition.
It’s definitely not for the casual viewer who wants constant action. You have to be in the mood for something a bit dusty and weird. If you are, it’s worth the time. If you aren't, you’ll probably be checking your watch every five minutes.
