5.8/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.8/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Magic Word remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have ten minutes to kill and you enjoy watching people squirm, sure. It is not exactly high art, but it is a quick slice of stage disaster. If you hate second-hand embarrassment or have zero patience for hecklers, you will probably want to skip this one entirely. 🎩
The Magic Word is one of those short films where you can practically hear the director screaming 'cut' in your head. The whole thing hinges on a magician trying to do his job while the audience members he pulls on stage just... refuse to cooperate. It’s not even that they are being malicious, they are just being deeply annoying.
There is this one moment where the magician tries to pull off a card trick, and the guy he picked just keeps leaning into the camera. It’s like he has never seen a lens before in his life. The way the magician’s eyes twitch is the only honest thing in the whole short.
Watching this reminded me a bit of the chaos in Fresh from the City where everyone seems to be talking over each other. Only here, it is supposed to be a polished performance. It really isn't, though.
It is definitely not as tight as the pacing in Hook and Ladder, but it’s got a weird energy. Sometimes the film just stops bothering with the magic tricks and turns into a shouting match. I don't think that was the original script, but it’s what we got.
It gets better once the magician stops trying to be clever and just accepts that his night is ruined. There is a weird satisfaction in watching a professional lose their cool. Honestly, I think the magician is the only person here who realizes how bad this is going.
It is thin. It is messy. It is kind of charming in a 'this shouldn't have been filmed' sort of way. Don't go looking for deep meaning here. Just watch the guy try to get his hat back from someone who clearly has no idea what they are doing. 🪄
