6.6/10

A definitive 6.6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Man in Search of His Murderer remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
You should definitely watch this today if you like dark humor and movies where everything goes wrong because the main character is an idiot. It’s perfect for people who like those 'race against time' stories but want something that feels a bit more messy and human.
If you hate old movies or subtitles, you’ll probably hate this. But honestly, it's their loss because this thing is a riot.
Hans is just... the worst at being sad. He tries to end it all at the start but he can't even get that right because he's too clumsy.
Then he catches a burglar in his house. Most people would call the police, but Hans decides to hire the guy to kill him instead.
It’s a contract. He literally signs a paper saying 'please murder me by next Tuesday' or something like that.
But the second the ink is dry, his luck flips. He gets a massive inheritance and meets a girl he actually likes.
Suddenly, life is great! Except for the fact that there is a professional killer wandering around trying to fulfill a contract.
The middle part of the movie is basically Hans running around like a headless chicken. 🐔
Heinz Rühmann is the lead and he has this great face for comedy. He looks like a surprised owl most of the time.
You can really tell Billy Wilder helped write this. The jokes have that mean streak that makes them actually funny instead of just polite.
There is a scene in a jazz club that feels like it goes on forever. The music is loud and everyone is dancing, and you can feel Hans’s panic growing in the background.
I noticed one extra in the background of the street scene who looks directly at the camera for a second. It made me laugh because it felt so accidental.
The movie is way more energetic than something like The Last Attraction. It doesn't just sit there; it moves.
Some of the dialogue is a bit fast. My German isn't great, but even with subs, you can tell they are rattling off lines like a machine gun.
The burglar is oddly polite. He’s very professional about the whole 'I have to kill you now' thing, which makes it even creepier.
There’s a lot of physical comedy that reminded me of Looking for Sally, but with more death threats.
One thing that bugged me was the lighting in the hallway scenes. It’s so dark you can barely see who is chasing who.
But maybe that was on purpose to make it feel more like a nightmare? Who knows.
The ending is very abrupt. It just kind of stops once the problem is solved, which I actually liked.
No long boring speeches about why life is worth living. Just a quick finish and out.
It’s a solid little film. Definitely worth a look if you can find a decent copy. 🎬
