6.4/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 6.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Naked Truth remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Should you watch The Naked Truth today? Probably not, unless you’re deep into a 1930s German cinema rabbit hole. If you’re a fan of screwball energy and don't mind when the plot gets a little bit too tangled for its own good, you might find something to like. But if you hate watching characters make the exact wrong decision for ninety minutes straight? Stay far away. ☕
Honestly, Jenny Jugo is the only reason this thing holds together. She has this spark that makes you forgive the fact that the screenplay feels like it was written on the back of a napkin during a very loud dinner party.
There is a scene near the middle where two men are arguing over a social slight, and it drags on for an eternity. The camera just sits there. It felt like the director went to get a sandwich and forgot to yell cut. It's weirdly hypnotic in how clunky it gets.
I couldn't help but compare it to Get-Rich-Quick Edgar in terms of that desperate, frantic pacing. Both films have this weird obsession with status that feels totally alien now, but back then? I guess it was the height of wit.
It reminds me a bit of the frantic energy in The Famous Mrs. Fair, though with significantly less emotional payoff. You can almost see the actors trying to find the point of the scene while they're actually performing it. It’s charming in a 'we’re all making this up as we go' kind of way.
There is a moment toward the end where the tension just evaporates. It’s almost funny how quickly the stakes vanish. One second, someone's reputation is ruined, and the next, everyone is just sort of... standing around. 🤷♂️
It’s not a masterpiece. It’s not even a particularly good movie by modern standards. But it has a pulse, and that's more than I can say for a lot of stuff I've sat through this month. Just don't go in expecting a life-changing experience.
