6.4/10

A definitive 6.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Public Menace remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Should you watch The Public Menace? Only if you have a soft spot for 1930s newsroom tropes and don't mind a plot that feels like it was written on a cocktail napkin during a very long lunch. If you want a tight, logical thriller, look elsewhere. If you like seeing people talk really fast and smoke a lot of cigarettes while a gangster with a very thin mustache looms in the background, you’ll probably have a decent time.
So, the whole premise is based on this fake marriage. Jean Arthur is basically the only reason to keep your eyes on the screen. She has this way of looking exhausted that feels incredibly real, like she just realized she’s in a movie that doesn't quite know where it's going. The gangster stuff is just kind of there, hanging around like a bad smell.
It’s not as punchy as Fog Over Frisco, which had a bit more style to its chaos. This one feels a bit more like a workday movie. You know, the kind where everyone involved is just hitting their marks and waiting for the final bell. 🔔
The transition from the "marriage plot" to the "gangster thriller" happens so fast it gave me whiplash. One minute it's a romantic comedy-ish thing, then suddenly there are guns and police sirens. It’s a total gear shift that the movie never really recovers from. It's almost charming how messy it is.
I kept noticing the extras in the background of the newsroom scenes. A couple of them aren't even pretending to work. One guy in the corner is just staring at the wall for what feels like three solid minutes. It’s hypnotic. Honestly, that background extra was giving a better performance than half the supporting cast. 🤷♂️
Is it a classic? Not by a long shot. Is it a fun way to kill an hour if you like old black-and-white flicks? Sure. Just don't ask too many questions about the legal system in this movie, because it clearly doesn't exist.
