6.9/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.9/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Robber Symphony remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like movies that feel like a circus caught in a rainstorm, maybe. It’s definitely not for anyone who needs a plot that makes sense or characters who behave like real human beings. If you’re a fan of Oh, Teacher! or just enjoy watching old, dusty experiments, you’ll find something here. Everyone else? You’ll probably want to turn it off within the first fifteen minutes.
There’s this moment early on where the boy is just running around, and the camera work feels… wobbly. Like it’s trying to catch its breath. It reminded me a bit of the frantic energy in Who Hit Me?, but with more violins.
The whole thing is basically one long, rambling song interrupted by some guys in bandit costumes. You can tell they were trying to do something ambitious, but it mostly just feels exhausting. The bandits are terrorizing this town, but they do it with such a weird, whimsical bounce in their step that it’s hard to take them seriously.
It’s almost charming, in a 'what were they thinking?' kind of way. It’s definitely not as tight as The Last of the Clintons. In fact, it makes that look like a masterclass in editing.
There’s a scene involving a clock tower that goes on for way too long. The silence in the room actually started to feel heavier than the music. I think one of the extras in the background was just standing there, picking at his teeth. You don't get that kind of accidental honesty in big studio films today. It’s messy, it’s loud, and sometimes it’s just plain weird.
I found myself wondering if anyone actually enjoyed making this. Some of the actors look like they’d rather be literally anywhere else, possibly helping out on the set of Cooks and Crooks instead. But then, there’s a sudden burst of genuine heart during a solo musical number, and you’re hooked again for a minute.
It’s not a good movie by any stretch. But it’s a watchable disaster. Don’t expect to remember much of the plot tomorrow morning. Just enjoy the weirdness while it lasts. 🎶
