5.4/10

A definitive 5.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Studio Murder Mystery remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a soft spot for 1930s B-movie fluff, you’ll probably get a kick out of this. If you need your mysteries to be tight, logical, and devoid of stage-y overacting, you’re going to be bored to tears within ten minutes. It’s a breezy watch, honestly.
The whole premise is classic: actress gets iced on set, and suddenly everyone is a suspect. It’s almost too clean. You can practically smell the hairspray and the desperation in the room.
The Inspector and the Doctor duo? They feel like they were pulled straight from a dime-store novel. They talk at people rather than to them. It reminded me a bit of the frantic energy in A Pair of Tights, though obviously in a completely different genre. There’s that same sense of "we’re making a movie, let’s keep it moving."
The murder scene itself is... something. The lead actress just sort of flops over in a way that feels like a poorly rehearsed stage play. I laughed, but I don't think that was the intention. The lighting is all over the place. One minute the room is bathed in shadows, the next it’s bright enough to perform surgery. Maybe that was the style back then, or maybe they just ran out of bulbs.
I found myself staring at the background extras more than the main plot. There’s one guy in the back left of the studio scene who keeps adjusting his tie every five seconds. It’s hypnotic. Why is he so nervous? Did he do it? Probably not, but I liked him more than the actual villain.
It’s not as polished as the big-budget stuff, but it doesn't try to be. It’s a crude little puzzle that feels like it was filmed in a weekend. Sometimes that’s exactly what I want on a Tuesday night. It’s not trying to reinvent the wheel, it’s just trying to spin it fast enough so you don't notice the spokes are missing.
Don't look for deep character growth here. You won't find it. You’ll just find a bunch of guys in suits yelling at each other about who had the motive. It’s simple, it’s loud, and it’s done. 🎥
