5.4/10

A definitive 5.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Tip-Tops in Peppyland remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
So, I spent some time watching The Tip-Tops in Peppyland, which is essentially a long, jittery advertisement for milk. It was produced by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, and man, you can really tell. It has that specific, aggressive enthusiasm for dairy that only a government agency could muster in the mid-20th century. 🥛
Is it worth your time? Only if you have a penchant for the truly bizarre. It feels less like a movie and more like a fever dream you’d have after eating too much cheese before bed. It’s not exactly The Silver Horde, that's for sure. It lacks the grit, but it more than makes up for it in sheer, unadulterated weirdness.
The whole thing moves at this frantic, forced pace. Everything is about being a 'Tip-Top,' which I guess is what they call people who drink enough milk? It’s patronizing in that way only old educational films can be. The actors are all smiling way too hard. Their teeth are just... so white. It’s actually kind of distracting.
There’s this one sequence where they explain the 'benefits' of milk and I swear I zoned out for a solid two minutes. It’s just repetitive, bouncy music and people holding glasses of milk like they’re holy relics. If you watch this with the sound off, it looks like a psychological thriller. Seriously, try it. 📺
It’s a promotional tool, sure, but it feels like it wants to be a musical without actually having the budget for one. You get these flashes of genuine ambition that crash into the reality of a shoestring budget. It reminded me a bit of the awkwardness in The Fast Mail-Man, just with more cows.
If you’re looking for a deep, cinematic experience, look elsewhere. But if you’re like me and you enjoy finding these weird, dusty relics of public messaging, it’s a curiosity. Just don't expect it to change your life. I'm still not even sure if I want a glass of milk after watching this. Maybe I’ll stick to water.
It’s just... really, really orange. Or maybe that’s just the film stock degrading. Who knows. 🤷♂️
