5.5/10

A definitive 5.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Tonto Kid remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, only if you have a massive soft spot for old-school, black-and-white westerns that were made in about fifteen minutes. If you need tight pacing or sharp dialogue, stay away. But if you want to watch Rex Bell ride around looking serious while people plot in dimly lit rooms, you’ll probably have a decent time.
The whole thing feels like it was filmed in a backyard on a Tuesday afternoon. There’s a guy named Creech who spends the entire movie looking like he’s smelling something sour. He’s the lawyer, and he’s doing the classic 'let's steal the ranch' bit that we've all seen a million times. It’s comforting in a weird, dusty way.
Then there’s the Tonto Kid. He stumbles onto some platinum, which is a nice upgrade from the usual gold mine trope. Of course, he gets framed for murder almost immediately. It’s almost impressive how quickly he becomes the bad guy in everyone else’s eyes.
Some of the acting is... well, let's just say they were definitely focused on getting to lunch. There’s a scene where someone is supposed to be dying and they just look like they’re trying to remember where they parked their horse. 🐴 It’s charming, actually. It feels more human than those big studio productions that have twenty takes of someone frowning.
I caught myself staring at the background extras in one scene. One guy in the corner just stands there for like three minutes holding a hat. He doesn’t move. He doesn’t blink. I started wondering if he was just waiting for his bus.
The movie doesn't bother with fancy camera tricks. It just points the lens at the action and lets the actors shout their lines. It reminds me a bit of the simplicity in The Fourth Horseman, though maybe a bit less polished. You aren't watching this for the cinematography, that’s for sure.
Is it a masterpiece? No. But sometimes I don't want a masterpiece. I want a guy in a cowboy hat doing something questionable, and on that front, The Tonto Kid delivers. It’s not going to change your life, but it might fill an hour if you’re bored and want to see how they did things back when movies were basically just plays filmed on location.
Don't look for deep meaning here. You won't find it. Just enjoy the ride and maybe notice the guy with the hat in the background. He’s the real star.
