You should watch this if you like old movies that feel like they are actually melting. It is perfect for a Sunday afternoon when you are feeling a bit lazy and don't mind a story that takes its time to get anywhere.
If you hate movies where people talk in circles about their feelings, you will probably want to turn this off after ten minutes. It’s a very specific kind of mood.
The whole thing is based on a story by W. Somerset Maugham. He was the king of writing about Europeans having bad times in hot places.
The movie is called The White Woman, but it’s an Italian production from 1934. It’s got that weird, early sound-era vibe where everything feels a little too quiet. 🔇
Carlo Lombardi plays the lead and he has this very stiff way of moving. He looks like he’s wearing a suit that is two sizes too small for his shoulders.
There is this one scene where a character is just sitting by a window. The light hits the bamboo blinds and makes these long stripes across her face.
It goes on for a long time. Maybe too long. But it’s kind of pretty if you don't think about it too much.
The movie reminds me a little bit of the tension in The She Wolf. It’s all about what people aren't saying.
Ky Duyen and Hoang Thi-The are in this too. They bring a very different energy than the European actors.
Hoang Thi-The has this incredibly still face. She can say more with a tiny blink than Lombardi does with his whole body.
The sets look a bit flimsy. You can tell they are on a stage in Italy and not actually in the jungle. 🌴
Sometimes the shadows on the wall move when they shouldn't. It’s like a stagehand walked past a light and nobody bothered to fix it in the edit.
I like those little mistakes. It makes the movie feel more real, somehow.
There’s a lot of talk about a letter. In these old dramas, there is always a letter that ruins everything.
It’s a bit like the plot of A Notorious Affair but with more mosquitoes. Or at least, you feel like there are mosquitoes because everyone looks so uncomfortable.
The sound quality on the version I watched was pretty rough. There is a constant hiss in the background that sounds like rain.
Actually, maybe it was raining in the movie. It’s hard to tell because the film is so grainy.
I found myself looking at the background actors more than the main stars. They just stand there looking bored, which is probably what you’d do in that heat.
One guy in the back of a bar scene just keeps polishing the same glass for three minutes straight. It’s kind of funny if you catch it.
The movie doesn't have the energy of something like Pay Day. It’s much more heavy and slow.
The dialogue is very dramatic. People say things like "my heart is a desert" and they say it with a straight face.
I don't think people talk like that in real life. Not even in 1934.
But that’s part of the charm of these old Italian films. They really go for it with the emotions. 🎭
Matilde Casagrande has a few scenes where she just stares into the camera. It’s a bit unsettling.
She has these very dark eyes that seem to swallow up the light. She’s probably the best part of the whole thing, honestly.
There’s a scene where someone plays a piano. The music doesn't quite match the hand movements of the actor.
It’s off by about half a second. Once you notice it, it’s all you can see.
I wonder if the director, Jack Salvatori, knew it was off. Or maybe they just didn't care back then.
It’s definitely not as polished as something like Nell Gwyn. It feels much more experimental and rough around the edges.
The ending comes up pretty fast. One minute they are arguing, and the next, the screen says "Fine."
It felt like they ran out of film or something. It didn't really resolve much, but maybe that’s the point.
Life in the tropics is just one long, unfinished argument, I guess.
Is it a masterpiece? No way. But it’s got a weird soul to it.
It’s better than most of the stuff that tries to be "important." It’s just a sweaty little story about people making bad choices.
I’d say give it a watch if you find a copy. Just make sure you have a cold drink nearby because the movie makes you feel thirsty just looking at it. 🥤
It’s definitely a step up from the usual boring stuff. Even if it is a bit crumbly at the edges.
