7.1/10

A definitive 7.1/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Woman and the Puppet remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Alright, so “The Woman and the Puppet” from 1929? Yeah, it’s worth a look today, especially if you’ve got a soft spot for silent films that feel a bit… unhinged. Anyone who likes a good character study, particularly one about obsessive love and games, will find something here. But if you need fast pacing or clear-cut heroes, you’ll probably be pulling your hair out. 😵💫
This film is mostly about Don Mateo, a rich fella who gets completely tangled up with Conchita, a young woman he meets on a train.
She's a cigarette maker, and she just shows up at his fancy palace in Seville, almost inviting herself in. Immediately, you get this vibe that she’s going to be trouble, but he doesn’t see it. He’s already smitten.
The whole movie then becomes this intense push-and-pull, where Conchita constantly messes with Mateo’s head. One moment she's all warm, encouraging his affections, the next she's ice cold, rejecting him completely.
You can almost feel Mateo’s frustration building, like a slow boil. It’s actually quite effective for a film from so long ago, really gets under your skin.
There's this small detail, a portrait of a young man in her room, that just hangs there, always a little mystery. She keeps him guessing about everything, and that portrait is just one more piece of her puzzle.
At one point, Mateo offers her money, and her mother, bless her, urges Conchita to take it. But Conchita, being Conchita, just runs off. This really cements her character as someone who plays by her own rules, not for money, but for the thrill of it all.
Months later, Mateo finds her dancing flamenco in a rather seedy cabaret, and you can practically hear the jazz age blare. It’s a great scene, very atmospheric.
She totally spots him in the crowd, of course, and then proceeds to flirt with every single person *but* him. She even flirts with the guy from the portrait, who is actually there!
It’s such a deliberate taunt, almost a masterclass in manipulation.
Then things get really wild. The manager calls her to prepare for her “next number,” and it becomes clear it’s not on stage. She’s dancing completely nude for rich tourists in a private room. 😱
For 1929, that’s just… wow. You don’t see that every day, even now, let alone back then.
Mateo bursts in, desperate, asking her to quit this life. She sort of agrees, but then just moves her act to a different place. It’s like she’s telling him, “You can’t control me, buddy.”
Another rendezvous, another round of making him absolutely insane with love and jealousy. The film does a really good job of showing how his obsession just eats him alive.
That reveal about the man in the picture, that he’s actually *paid* by Conchita to pretend to be her lover? That’s the moment you realize how deep her game goes. It’s not just playful; it’s calculated.
Mateo finally gives up, decides to move to Paris with a friend, totally defeated. You almost feel bad for him, even though he's not exactly a saint.
But then, Conchita shows up. She confesses her love, and they start a “real romance.” The ending is a bit abrupt, makes you wonder if it’s truly real or just another twist in her game. It leaves you thinking, which is pretty neat for a silent film.
Conchita Montenegro as Conchita is just mesmerizing. Her expressions, her body language, she carries the whole film. You can’t take your eyes off her, even when you want to shake Mateo and tell him to run. It's truly a performance that makes the film pop, more than the plot itself sometimes.
The film’s rhythm feels very much like Mateo’s emotional state, swinging from hopeful to despairing. Some scenes linger a bit, making the tension build, sometimes almost to an uncomfortable point. But that’s kind of the point, I think.
Overall, it’s a fascinating watch if you’re into the psychology of obsession and power dynamics in relationships. Just be ready for a ride that’s less about plot points and more about the dizzying dance between two people. You might walk away feeling a little exhausted, but definitely not bored. 🎭
