7.2/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 7.2/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Young Count remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like movies that move fast and don't take their own premise too seriously, you'll probably have a decent time with The Young Count. It’s a light, airy thing that mostly succeeds on charm alone. But if you’re the type of person who needs strict logic or deep character studies, stay away. This movie has no interest in explaining how anyone stays fooled for more than five minutes.
Anny Ondra is the whole show here. She has this way of blinking and tilting her head that makes the whole 'pretending to be a boy' thing feel less like a massive lie and more like a private joke she’s sharing with the audience. It's honestly kind of impressive how she carries the weight of the film without ever looking like she's trying too hard.
The grandfather character is exactly what you expect—a grumpy, stiff man who probably hasn't smiled since the turn of the century. There’s a scene where he’s lecturing the 'young count' about honor, and you can see him struggling to keep a straight face. It’s a small, fleeting moment, but it’s the best part of the whole interaction.
I couldn't help but think about how different this feels compared to something like A Woman of Affairs. That one is all heavy atmosphere and brooding, whereas The Young Count is just happy to be here. It’s not trying to win an award. It’s just trying to get a chuckle out of you.
There's a weird rhythm to the scenes where the ruse is almost discovered. The camera lingers on the grandfather’s confused expressions just a second too long, which makes it feel kind of awkward in a funny way. It’s like the movie realizes the joke is wearing thin but doesn't know how to pivot yet.
Honestly, you could watch this on a rainy afternoon and forget it by dinner time, but that’s not really a criticism. Sometimes you don't need a life-changing experience. Sometimes you just need a girl in a suit causing trouble for an old man who really needs to relax. 🎩✨
