6/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Aces Wild remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Should you watch Aces Wild? Only if you have a soft spot for grainy, black-and-white cowboy stuff and about an hour to kill on a rainy Sunday. If you need tight pacing or acting that feels like it wasn't recorded in a closet, look elsewhere. People who think The Hitch Hiker is too intense or dark will probably find this a nice, breezy palette cleanser.
There’s this moment early on where the townspeople just hand over their valuables to a guy with a metal box because he says it's a 'safe.' It’s hilariously naive. Like, they don't even blink.
Sonny the Marvel Horse is easily the best actor in the bunch. He’s got more personality in his ears than some of the human leads have in their entire faces. Honestly, half the time I was just watching the horse to see if he’d do something funny while the guys were busy talking about gold.
The plot is essentially a circle. Someone steals money, people ride horses in a line, they find the money, repeat. It’s not exactly The Pagan in terms of depth, but it’s got a rhythm to it that’s kind of hypnotic if you stop trying to follow the logic.
I noticed the shadows in the desert scenes are all over the place. Sometimes they’re pointing left, then right, like the sun was just moving whenever it felt like it. It’s messy, but it’s part of the charm. Nobody was checking continuity back then, and I kind of respect that 🐎.
Kelton is the kind of villain who spends more time smirking than actually doing anything evil. It’s a bit exhausting to watch him try to look menacing. Every time he leans against a wall, you can almost hear the director shouting, 'Look meaner!'
There's a scene involving the sheriff that goes on for a bit too long. He’s just pacing back and forth, and the camera lingers on him until you start wondering if the film reel got stuck. It’s awkward, but I didn't hate it.
Sometimes you just want a movie that doesn't try to change your life. Aces Wild is exactly that. It's flat, it's dusty, and it’s over before you can get bored. Just don't ask me what happened to the gold at the end. I think it just vanished into the ether.
