6.6/10

A definitive 6.6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Three Men on a Horse remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you’re into that fast-talking 1930s comedy style where everyone is constantly shouting over each other, you’ll probably have a good time. If the idea of a movie that feels like a loud, sweaty stage play makes your teeth itch, stay away. It’s definitely not for everyone, but it’s got a specific kind of manic energy.
The whole thing revolves around Frank McHugh as Erwin. He’s so timid it’s almost physically painful to watch. He writes little poems for greeting cards, which is the perfect setup for how out of place he is when he ends up in a bar with a bunch of grifters.
Sam Levene is doing the heavy lifting here as the ringleader of the gamblers. He’s got that specific gravel-voiced intensity that makes you believe he’d lose his last nickel on a three-legged pony.
The movie moves fast. Like, real fast. Sometimes it feels like they were worried the film stock was going to run out. It doesn't give you much room to breathe, but maybe that’s the point? It mimics the frantic energy of a racetrack.
There’s this one scene in the hotel room that feels like it’s been going on for forty minutes. They’re just yelling about horses and money, and I found myself checking how much time was left. It’s funny, sure, but it’s also exhausting.
It’s not as polished as something like How to Sleep, which really knew how to lean into its own absurdity. Here, the absurdity is just baked into the characters.
The whole plot is basically one big misunderstanding that spirals out of control. It’s classic screwball stuff. It doesn’t try to be deep, and it doesn't try to teach you a lesson. It’s just people being desperate and loud for an hour or so. 🐎
Is it a masterpiece? No. Is it better than sitting through some of the more tired stuff like The District Attorney? Honestly, yeah. It’s got a pulse.
Sometimes you just want to watch a guy who writes greeting cards get bullied by guys in trench coats, you know? It’s a mood. Even if it is a bit messy around the edges.
