6.3/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.3/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Three Musketeers remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you're into dusty, old-school adventure where the acting feels like it's being projected from a stage back to the cheap seats, then yeah, pull up a chair. It’s got that specific, clunky charm that you just don't get anymore. If you need your action scenes to be fast, snappy, or coherent, you’re going to be bored to tears within twenty minutes.
d'Artagnan is basically just a kid who doesn't know when to shut up, which is honestly the most relatable part of the whole thing. He shows up in Paris and immediately decides his best strategy is to challenge three of the most feared fighters to duels. It’s a total disaster, obviously. But the way they just shrug it off and start hanging out is the kind of leap in logic that makes old movies feel weirdly cozy.
The pacing is… well, it’s a choice. Sometimes scenes just sit there, simmering in their own juices while characters stare meaningfully at stone walls. It reminded me a bit of the slow burn in The Sign of Four, where you’re waiting for the explosion but you’re mostly just watching people walk through hallways.
It’s not trying to be a deep dive into human nature, and thank goodness for that. It’s just people swinging metal sticks and looking intense. There’s a scene where they’re plotting something against the Queen, and the lighting is so dim I honestly thought my monitor had died. Maybe it was supposed to be dramatic? It mostly just looked like they forgot to pay the electric bill.
I found myself comparing it to the vibe of The Fearless Rider, in that it’s got that same sense of "let's just go do the thing and see what happens." It doesn't have a master plan. It’s messy, it’s loud, and the hairpieces are questionable at best. Honestly? I kind of love it for that. It feels like a real movie made by real people who didn't have a giant corporate manual telling them how to structure a scene.
Don't look for logic. Just watch them run around. It’s a bit of a marathon, but the payoff is just more sword fighting, which is exactly what I came for. ⚔️
