6/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Tu m'oublieras remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, it depends on how much you like the feeling of watching a film that seems to have been pulled directly out of a damp attic. If you’re into the moody, slightly stiff rhythms of early French drama, you’ll probably find something to love here. If you need things to move fast or want a neat, tidy ending, you’ll likely be checking your watch within the first twenty minutes. 🕰️
It’s not a film that explains itself, which is either a relief or a headache. You just sort of land in the middle of these people’s lives and hope you can keep up with who is pining for whom.
There’s a scene about halfway through where someone is staring out a window for what feels like an eternity. It’s not meant to be profound or a deep metaphor. It just happens. It feels like the camera operator got distracted or maybe forgot to yell 'cut.' I actually loved that, because real life has these weird, dead-air moments where you’re just standing there waiting for your brain to catch up with your heart.
Comparing it to something like Far from the Madding Crowd, it’s much less about the grand landscape and more about the tight, cramped rooms these characters haunt. It’s claustrophobic in a way that feels intentional, like the walls are literally closing in on their bad decisions.
I found myself wondering if anyone actually talks like this, or if this is just how people thought we talked in the 1930s. It’s got this weirdly artificial rhythm that makes it feel like a dream you had once and can’t quite shake.
It’s a bit of a relic. Don't go in expecting a polished masterpiece. It’s just a scratchy, honest little piece of work that doesn't care if you like it or not. 🎞️
