6/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Two Against the World remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a thing for black-and-white dramas where everyone speaks with that crisp, mid-Atlantic accent, you might get a kick out of Two Against the World. It’s definitely worth a watch if you enjoy courtroom tension, but if you’re looking for something that moves fast or makes logical sense, stay away.
Actually, stay away if you hate watching people make terrible decisions for 70 minutes straight. It’s like watching a train wreck in slow motion, but everyone is wearing a tuxedo.
The whole movie hinges on this murder trial. Constance Bennett is stuck in the middle of it. She’s high society, she’s wealthy, and she’s being dragged through the mud because she knows too much. The prosecutor is her suitor, which adds this layer of 'will they or won't they' that feels really out of place when there is a literal body in the room.
There’s a scene where the dialogue just loops. They keep saying the same thing about 'honor' and 'the truth' and honestly, I think the actors were getting tired of it too. You can see it in their eyes. They want to go home.
It’s not as snappy as Okay America!, which had a bit more punch to it. This one feels a little bit like it’s dragging its feet in the mud. There's a moment where a witness is on the stand and the camera just lingers on a glass of water for way too long. I’m pretty sure the boom operator bumped into a table, and they just decided to keep it in the edit.
You can tell the movie wants to be a big, sweeping statement on class and justice. But it’s mostly just people shouting at each other in rooms with high ceilings. If you liked the vibes of The Bridge of Sighs, you’ll probably find this comforting in its predictability.
It’s fine. It’s not great. The ending feels tacked on, like they realized they had to finish the movie by lunchtime. But for a rainy afternoon? Sure. Why not. Just don't expect to remember much of it the next day. 🎩
