7.1/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 7.1/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Two Too Young remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Look, if you have a soft spot for the Our Gang shorts, you’ll probably find something to enjoy here. If you’re looking for high-concept cinema or anything resembling a coherent moral lesson, stay far away. This is basically just fifteen minutes of children yelling at each other over some explosives. 🧨
It’s not exactly the high-water mark of the series, but it’s got that specific, frantic energy that makes these old shorts weirdly addictive. You know, that feeling like the director just said 'go' and hoped nobody got hurt.
Spanky and Alfalfa are at it again. They see Porky and Buckwheat with fireworks and decide that, naturally, they should be the ones holding the stash. It’s a very simple, very mean-spirited setup that works because, well, that’s just how these characters operate.
There’s this one moment where Alfalfa tries to look tough, and it’s just painfully awkward. You can tell he’s trying to sell the bit, but he just looks like he’s holding his breath. It reminded me a bit of the desperate energy in Chickens Come Home, where everyone is just trying a little too hard to keep the plates spinning.
The whole thing feels like it was filmed on a Tuesday afternoon when everyone was just kind of done with it. It doesn’t have the polish of Melody in Spring, but maybe that’s the point? Sometimes a movie just needs to be a little bit broken.
I found myself zoning out during the middle chase scene. It just goes on and on, looping through the same three yards. It’s not boring, exactly, but it’s definitely not doing anything new.
Anyway, it’s a quick watch. Don't expect to have your life changed or anything. It's just a bunch of kids acting like, well, kids. Sometimes that's enough, right? 🤷♂️
