7.4/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 7.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Vampyr remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you want a normal movie with a beginning, middle, and end that actually makes logical sense, skip this. Seriously. You’ll be bored to tears. But if you’ve ever wanted to watch a nightmare that was filmed on actual celluloid, then Vampyr is basically your holy grail.
It’s a movie that feels like it was filmed in a fever. It doesn't care about what you need to know to follow the plot. It just wants you to feel that cold, damp breeze on your neck.
There’s this one sequence where the shadows start dancing on their own. It’s so simple—just light hitting a wall—but it feels deeply wrong. Like the world is glitching out. I caught myself holding my breath, waiting for the shadows to stop, but they just kept on doing their own thing.
Dreyer doesn't use standard horror tricks here. There are no monsters jumping out of closets. Just a lot of fog and a guy looking confused in a field. It’s almost too quiet.
The pacing is… weird. It’s not slow, exactly. It’s more like it’s underwater. You’re wading through these scenes and nothing happens, and then suddenly someone is being buried alive. It’s a bit jarring, honestly.
The girl in the bed—you know, the sick one—she has this look in her eyes that makes you want to look away. It’s not just makeup. It’s like she’s already halfway to the other side.
I’ve seen plenty of old films that try to be spooky. Some feel like Whispering Wires where it’s all just technical talk and stiff suits. But this? This feels raw. It’s messy and doesn't explain itself.
I’m still not entirely sure what happened to that guy at the inn. Did he even arrive there, or was he already dead? Maybe that’s the point. 👻
It’s definitely not for everyone. If you’re looking for a plot-heavy thriller, go find Barb Wire or something with more explosions. But if you want to lose your mind for an hour, pull up a chair. Just don't expect to leave feeling refreshed. 🕯️
