Should you watch Vanquished Hearts? If you're the kind of person who enjoys watching a slow-motion car crash of human emotions, sure. If you need a plot that moves faster than a Sunday morning walk, you'll probably hate it. It’s got that specific, dusty 1940s mood where everyone is always holding a cigarette or a grudge, usually both at once.
There’s a scene near the middle where María Guadalupe Delgado is just staring out a window for what feels like a solid three minutes. Most directors would cut away. Not here. You just watch the light shift on her face while she processes something we aren't even fully clued in on yet. It’s the most honest thing in the whole movie. 🎥
It reminded me a bit of the suffocating domestic atmosphere in The House Without Children, but with more shouting and less resolution. The characters are constantly circling each other, like they’re waiting for the other person to blink first.
I keep thinking about the costumes. They feel lived-in, a bit frayed at the edges. It’s a nice change from the polished look of something like Solid Gold, where everything feels like it came straight from a department store rack. Here, people look like they’ve been wearing the same coat for three years.
There are moments where the dialogue just drops off a cliff. Arturo Campoamor will start a sentence about 'the future' and then just… stop. He stares at the wall. It’s not smooth, it’s not clever, it’s just awkward. It feels like a real conversation where someone forgot what they were talking about mid-thought. 🤷♂️
Is it a masterpiece? No. Does it feel like a human being actually made it? Yeah, mostly because it’s so uneven. It’s got a weird, lopsided rhythm that I kind of dig. You can tell they really cared about the performances even when the script was giving them absolutely nothing to work with.
Don't go in expecting a punchy thriller. It’s more like sitting on a porch watching neighbors argue. You don't know the whole story, you don't really want to be involved, but you can’t quite pull your eyes away either.
