6.3/10

A definitive 6.3/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Viva Villa! remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Look, if you like old-school, slightly chaotic epics where the acting is turned up to eleven, you’ll probably have a blast with Viva Villa!. It’s not exactly a history lesson, and if you’re the type of person who needs every plot point to be grounded in gritty realism, you’re gonna hate it. It’s got that specific 1930s studio gloss that makes everything feel like a play put on for a very large camera.
Wallace Beery is absolutely everywhere in this movie. He plays Pancho Villa like he’s trying to swallow the whole screen, and honestly, it works in a weird, frantic sort of way. You can tell he’s having the time of his life being a boisterous, laughing bandit.
There’s this one scene where he’s just looming over the proceedings, and you realize the camera is obsessed with him. It’s not subtle. It’s not meant to be.
It’s funny comparing this to something like The Arizona Terror. Both deal with outlaws and dusty landscapes, but Viva Villa! has this bloated, expensive feel that makes it feel like a different planet entirely. It lacks the scrappy, fast-paced energy of the smaller stuff.
There’s a moment near the middle where a character delivers a speech about justice that lasts for what feels like an eternity. I think I checked my watch twice. The movie gets a lot better once it stops trying to be a serious political epic and just lets Villa ride around being a nuisance to the powerful.
I wouldn’t call it a masterpiece, and it’s definitely not subtle. But there’s a strange, dusty charm to the whole thing. It’s like watching a giant, expensive, and slightly confused circus parade. 🤠
It’s definitely better than The Old Soak, if only because it actually tries to do something big, even if it falls on its face halfway through. Sometimes, a messy attempt at something grand is just more fun to watch than a perfectly fine, boring movie.
Keep your expectations low on the accuracy front. Just enjoy the ride.
