5.6/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. When a Man Rides Alone remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have an hour to kill and a soft spot for grainy, black-and-white horse operas from the early thirties, sure. It is not going to change your life, but it moves fast enough to keep you from checking your phone.
Who will hate it? Anyone expecting a modern, complex script or fancy camerawork. It’s bare-bones filmmaking that barely stops to breathe.
The Llano Kid is robbing stages, but he is picky about it. He only goes after the Cottonwood Mine’s cash, which is a nice touch. It gives him a bit more personality than your average outlaw, even if the movie doesn't really know how to show that beyond just telling us.
The Sheriff is on his tail, obviously. There is a whole scene with a wanted poster that feels like it takes up half the movie, just waiting for the hero to realize he is the one they are hunting. Classic stuff.
There is a moment where the Sheriff just stands there, holding a photo, looking at it with such intensity that it almost becomes funny. He’s staring at that piece of paper like it holds the secrets of the universe. It lasts just a beat too long. Maybe he’s just squinting?
It’s a far cry from the lighthearted chaos of Betty Boop's Bizzy Bee, that is for sure. And if you are looking for anything as nuanced as El proceso de Mary Dugan, you are looking in the wrong place. This is just a guy on a horse, a badge, and a bag of stolen gold.
The pacing is a bit weird. It feels like someone took a longer movie and just cut out every other scene to see if it would still make sense. Honestly? It mostly does.
Watching this, I couldn't help but think about how quiet these old films are. No big score swelling every time a punch is thrown. Just the sound of boots on dirt and the occasional horse whinny. It’s strangely relaxing, even when the shooting starts.
It’s not a masterpiece. But sometimes you don't want a masterpiece. You just want a man riding alone into the sunset, or at least toward the next town over. 🤠
