If you're a history buff who gets tired of modern documentaries with their flashy reenactments and dramatic swells of music, then yes, sit down and watch this. If you need a cohesive narrative or a clear, easy-to-follow lesson, you’re probably going to hate it. It’s messy, disjointed, and feels more like you’re digging through an old trunk of memories than watching a structured film.
The whole thing is essentially a patchwork of footage from both sides of the trenches. Some of it is grainy to the point of being abstract shapes, and other bits are surprisingly sharp. It doesn't hold your hand. One minute you're staring at a muddy field, and the next you're seeing a line of men who look absolutely exhausted.
There is this one specific sequence of a ruined town that just goes on for way too long. The camera operator clearly just forgot to stop recording, or maybe they just didn't know where else to point the lens. It creates this weird, heavy silence that felt more honest than any voiceover could have managed. I actually found myself holding my breath.
It’s not trying to be The Light of Western Stars where everything is choreographed for the camera. This is just life, or what was left of it, captured on film. Some of the shots of the machinery are actually kind of terrifying. You see these massive, clunky tanks and you realize just how primitive yet deadly everything was back then.
I couldn't help but think about how different this is from the lighter fare like Go As You Please. No jokes here. No songs. Just the weight of history pressing down on you. 🎞️
Honestly, the editing is pretty choppy. It jumps from a quiet street to a chaotic front line without warning. It gave me a bit of a headache, but I think that’s the point. It’s meant to feel like the chaos of the time, not a polished history lecture.
You can tell this wasn't made with a huge budget. Sometimes the film just flickers out, or the contrast is so blown out you can’t tell who is who. It’s deeply imperfect. But maybe that’s why I actually watched it all the way through.
If you go in expecting a standard documentary, you’ll be bored to tears. But if you want to feel the grime of the trenches, it’s worth a look. Just don't expect it to tell you what to think.
