5.3/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.3/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. When the Red, Red, Robin Comes Bob, Bob Bobbin' Along remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you've got five minutes and want to see how animators in the early days basically treated anatomy as a suggestion, yes. It's pure visual noise in the best way possible. If you’re looking for a serious narrative, move along. You’ll probably hate this if you find those old-timey, jittery character movements stressful.
Watching this felt like downing a triple espresso. Everything is bobbing, weaving, and snapping into place with that specific, twitchy energy Fleischer was famous for. The titular robin doesn't just fly; he bounces through the frame like he’s on a pogo stick.
There's this moment where the music swells and the entire forest just starts shaking. It reminds me of the manic energy in Peace on Earth, though this one is definitely more focused on the joy of the tune than any kind of deeper message. It’s just a bird, singing, and a bunch of other animals losing their minds over it.
Honestly, the animation quality is all over the place. Some frames look like they were rushed out the door in a panic, while others have this gorgeous, flowing detail that makes you wonder how they even pulled it off in the 1920s. It’s not polished, but it has soul.
I caught myself humming the melody for an hour after it ended. That’s probably the point. It’s an earworm wrapped in ink and paint. If you’ve seen Cupid's Knockout, you know exactly the kind of surreal, bouncy world Dave Fleischer builds. It feels familiar, like an old song you forgot you knew.
The pacing is relentless. There is no downtime. It’s just constant movement until the screen cuts to black. Sometimes, I wish there was a beat to catch my breath, but the short is so short that it doesn't really matter. You're in, you're out, and you’re slightly confused about why that turtle was dancing like that.
It’s definitely not a masterpiece. But it’s definitely not boring. 🐦🎶
