7.5/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 7.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Women Men Marry remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
I'm gonna be honest, I only watched this because I saw Randolph Scott's name in the credits. He’s so young here it’s almost distracting, like seeing a photo of your grandpa from before he got old and grumpy.
You should watch this if you’re a completionist for early talkies or if you just like seeing old stars before they were famous. Most people will probably find it way too slow and stiff, honestly. 😴
It's a weirdly paced movie about a guy named Jim who is doing a bad job at being a husband. He’s caught up with a woman who isn't his wife, and the whole thing feels like a stage play that someone decided to film in a hurry.
The sound quality is... well, it’s 1931. You can almost hear the actors thinking about where the microphone is hidden in the flower vase. 🎙️
One thing that stuck out was the office sets. They look so empty, like the production ran out of money for desks and just hoped we wouldn't notice the blank walls.
Randolph Scott shows up and he's just... there. It’s crazy to see him here before he spent the rest of his life on a horse in movies like Riders of the Dawn.
There’s a scene where a guy is talking on the phone and he just keeps nodding at nothing for like thirty seconds. It goes on for so long it almost becomes a comedy bit, even though it's supposed to be serious business.
Sally Blane is the highlight for me. She has this energy that the rest of the movie lacks, even when the dialogue is clunky as hell.
The plot involves a newspaper, but it’s mostly just an excuse for people to walk into rooms and look shocked. It's not exactly high stakes stuff.
It’s definitely not as exciting as watching a real physical fight like The Official Motion Pictures of the Heavyweight Boxing Contest, that’s for sure. Most of the "action" here is just people sighing in suits.
The lighting in the final act is weirdly dark. I couldn't tell if it was an artistic choice or if a bulb just burned out on set that day. 💡
Actually, the ending feels very rushed. Like they realized they only had two minutes of film left in the camera and had to wrap up every marriage in the script immediately.
It’s not a great movie, but it’s a short one. Sometimes that is enough when you just want to see how they made movies back when talking was a new trick.
If you enjoy seeing the cracks in early Hollywood history, give it a look. Just don't expect it to change your life or anything.
