3.1/10

A definitive 3.1/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Yerku gisher remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a weird itch for early Soviet-era Armenian cinema, sure. Dive in. If you want a fast-paced war movie with big explosions and clear sides, you are going to be bored to tears within twenty minutes. 🙄
It’s a quiet film. Almost aggressively quiet at times. It deals with a Bolshevik revolt inside a Dashnak detachment, and it’s mostly just men talking in rooms that look like they haven’t been dusted since the turn of the century.
There is this one scene where a character is just staring at a flickering lantern for way too long. I think the director wanted to show deep contemplation, but honestly, it felt like the actor just forgot his next line. It’s that kind of movie.
It feels a bit like The Exploits of the Emden in how it treats history—sort of stiff, but clearly trying to say something big. The lighting is harsh. Sometimes it feels like they’re using a single lightbulb powered by a crank.
The pacing is a total mess, but in a way that feels honest. Real life during a revolt probably isn't a montage of cool hero shots. It’s mostly waiting around, worrying if your neighbor is a traitor, and drinking lukewarm tea.
There’s a moment near the middle where someone drops a metal cup. The sound it makes is so sharp compared to the rest of the muffled dialogue that I actually jumped. It was the most exciting part of the scene.
I kept thinking about Mickey's Strategy while watching, mostly because they are on such opposite ends of the spectrum. One is all about movement and tricks, and Yerku gisher is about people sitting in the dark, trapped by their own choices.
Is it perfect? Hardly. The camera work is a bit shaky, and there are times the frame seems to be doing its own thing. But there’s a grit to it that keeps you watching, even when you aren’t entirely sure who is mad at whom anymore. 🎥
It’s not a masterpiece. It’s just... a film. It exists, it’s moody, and it leaves you feeling a bit tired in a way that feels strangely appropriate for the subject matter.
