6.8/10

A definitive 6.8/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Yin mu yan shi remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, only if you’re the type of person who gets a kick out of staring at 1920s film grain for an hour. If you want a tight, punchy narrative, keep walking. But if you’re a total nerd for cinematic history or just want to see how they faked drama before talkies ruined the mystery, you’ll probably find something to love here. 🎞️
Folks who hate reading title cards every thirty seconds should stay far away. It’s slow. Like, really slow.
Bugao Cheng is doing a lot of heavy lifting here with his face alone. There’s this one scene where he’s staring out a window—it goes on for way too long. The silence in the room actually started to feel a bit heavy. You can tell he’s trying to convey this deep, existential dread, but it mostly just looks like he’s trying to remember if he left the oven on.
The pacing is all over the place. One minute we’re dealing with high-stakes social drama, and the next, everyone is just kind of walking in circles. It’s not necessarily bad, just… distracting. It reminded me a bit of the frantic energy in Black and Tan Mix Up, though nowhere near as chaotic.
It’s funny, I kept thinking about how this compares to something like Glorious Betsy. They share that same weird, desperate desire to be taken seriously by the audience. But where that movie leans into the grandeur, Yin mu yan shi feels much more cramped. Like it was filmed in a shoebox.
I didn’t find myself caring much about the central romance, but that’s fine. I was more interested in the background extras. There’s a guy in a hat near the back of the market scene who is clearly bored out of his mind. He’s leaning against a wall, checking his watch—or whatever they checked back then—while the main characters are busy crying about their honor.
It’s not a masterpiece. It’s not even really a 'good' movie by modern standards. But it’s a time capsule, and sometimes that’s enough. Just don't go in expecting a life-changing experience. You'll leave disappointed if you do. 🤷♂️
