6.1/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.1/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. You Said a Mouthful remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like old-school slapstick and don’t mind a plot that’s thinner than a pool noodle, you’ll probably have a decent time. Folks who need tight pacing or a story that makes actual sense should skip this one. It’s definitely a movie for people who want to see a guy with an impossibly wide mouth get pushed into situations he’s totally unprepared for.
Joe E. Brown is basically a cartoon character in human skin. Watching him try to pass himself off as an elite athlete is the kind of stuff that just doesn't happen in movies anymore.
The whole Catalina Island race setup is just an excuse to put Brown in a swimsuit. He looks absolutely terrified most of the time, which is exactly what the role needs. The way he flails around in the water makes you wonder if he’s actually going to make it, which is the only real tension in the film.
There is this one moment where he’s trying to be all tough and athletic, but his movements are just so jittery. It’s funny, but also kind of exhausting to watch. You can tell he’s giving it his all, even if his 'all' is mostly just frantic arm-waving. 🏊♂️
Yeah, she’s in this. It’s funny to see her in a role that’s basically just playing second fiddle to Brown’s manic energy. She does a good job of keeping things grounded, though she mostly just looks confused about why she’s standing next to this guy.
It’s not as sharp as some of the other comedies from the era, like The Waning Sex, which had a bit more bite to it. Here, everything feels a bit more like a staged vaudeville act.
Sometimes the movie just stops caring about the plot entirely. It just wants to see Brown in another sticky situation. And honestly? That works fine for me. It’s not trying to win an award. It’s just trying to get a laugh. 😂
The ending is exactly what you expect. No surprises, no twists, just a guy falling into a victory he didn't earn. It’s silly, it’s a little loud, and it’s a perfect way to kill an hour if you’re feeling nostalgic for simple, goofy cinema.
