5.6/10

A definitive 5.6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. You're in the Army Now remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a soft spot for those old-school, black-and-white comedies where everyone speaks in a very specific, clipped way, you’ll probably find something to like here. It’s light, it’s fluffy, and it doesn't try to change your life. If you’re looking for a realistic depiction of military life or deep character arcs, you’re looking in the wrong place. This one is for the folks who want to switch their brains off for an hour and watch people trip over their own egos.
The whole thing feels like a stage play that someone decided to film on a sunny afternoon. There’s a lot of posturing, especially from the two leads who treat winning the girl like it’s a tactical maneuver in a war zone. Honestly, the Sergeant Major’s daughter seems to be the only one with any common sense, though she’s mostly there to be the prize in this weird game of soldier-tag.
Specific observation: There’s a scene where they’re all standing around a mess hall table, and the way they hold their coffee cups is distractingly polite. Nobody actually drinks the stuff, they just sort of gesture with the mugs. It’s those little moments that remind you this is all just a set.
Compared to the grittier stuff like Derrocada, this movie is practically floating in the air. It’s not trying to be important. It just wants to be a lark. Sometimes it succeeds, sometimes it feels like it's running on fumes by the third act.
It’s not as manic as Why Husbands Go Mad, but it shares that same DNA of people running in circles because they’re too stubborn to just talk to each other. I kept waiting for someone to drop the act, but they never really do. Maybe that’s the point? Or maybe the script just didn't know where to go next.
If you're in a mood for something that feels like an old dusty postcard, give it a whirl. Just don't expect it to haunt your thoughts tomorrow morning. It’s a snack, not a meal. 🎥
