7/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Zwei Genies remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like old-school German comedies where everyone is yelling just a little bit louder than necessary, you’ll dig this. It’s short, punchy, and doesn’t waste time with long, philosophical speeches. If you need modern pacing or high-budget effects, you’re gonna be bored stiff. Seriously, just skip it if you need constant stimulation.
The whole thing hinges on this tiny, claustrophobic office set. You can almost smell the stale coffee and dust. It’s funny how they lean into the absurdity of two guys just… refusing to stop the lie. They just keep going, deeper and deeper, until it gets genuinely uncomfortable.
There’s a moment with a stack of papers that lasts, I swear, an entire minute of pure, awkward silence. It’s the kind of timing that makes you wonder if the director just forgot to yell cut. But somehow, it works. It makes you feel like you’re stuck in that office with them.
It definitely reminds me of the chaotic energy in He Who Gets Smacked. There's that same desperation in the performances, where the characters are terrified of being found out but are too stubborn to just say 'sorry, my bad.'
It’s not a masterpiece. It’s just a weird, little relic. It’s like watching a train wreck where everyone is wearing a suit and trying to balance a budget. 🤷♂️
I caught myself laughing at the wrong times. Is that bad? Probably not. It’s a comedy, and sometimes the best jokes are the ones that aren't even written in the script. It’s just two guys running out of things to say and doing it with style.
