Biography
Adele Farrington slipped into the world sometime in 1867, her cradle already misplaced by history. Decades of footlights and greasepaint preceded the day, at forty-seven, she stepped before a movie camera for the first time, trading stage boards for the flickering new world of 1914’s BUCK PARVIN IN THE MOVIES. Though casting offices soon labeled her the quintessential supporting face, she refused to stay in the shadows: her turn in 1919’s IN OLD KENTUCKY proved she could shoulder more than mere background chatter. Through the jazz-soaked twenties she kept pace with the medium’s sprint, slipping effortlessly into lace gloves, matronly aprons, or bejeweled silk as each scenario demanded. The curtain finally rang down on her screen career in 1926 when, at fifty-nine, she took her last bow in SHADOW OF THE LAW. Los Angeles, the city that had fed her livelihood, claimed her on December 19, 1936, closing the book on a life that had spanned sixty-nine eventful years.
