Biography
Belle Bennett learned to steal a spotlight before she could spell her own surname. Her parents, William and Mary Bendon—who traded their quiet surname for the marquee snap of “Bennett”—piled their three children, scenery, and a flea-bitten dog into wagons that smelled of greasepaint and kerosene. “Billy Bennett’s Big Shows” pitched canvas in county-seat clearings and borrowed opera houses, swapping jokes, songs, and dime-novel melodramas for coins that clinked into a tin cashbox.
