Biography
A winter baby—January 18, 1883—Barker first opened his eyes in Hempstead, Long Island, and soon began trading New York’s salt air for the hiss and flicker of early movie sets. By 1916 he had stepped in front of the camera for *One Day*, then slipped behind it to marshal actors through the screwball heat of *Come Out of the Kitchen* in 1919 and the sentimental glow of *Mother’s Boy* a decade later. Thirty-five years after that debut, on a crisp September 29, 1951, the city that launched him claimed him back, closing his personal reel in Manhattan.
