Biography
A Bay-Area spark named Carmen Phillips first drew breath on 15 September 1888 in Oakland, California. Within a decade she had traded trolley bells for klieg lights, stepping before the camera in “The New Adventures of Terence O’Rourke” (1915). She returned to the screen as the cursed jewel’s keeper in “The Hope Diamond Mystery” (1921) and as a spirited foil in “The Fighting Coward” (1924). Six days before Christmas 1966, the curtain closed on her life in San Marino, California, but the flicker of her early pictures still dances in the archives.
