Biography
Caroline Rankin grew up in a household where the air crackled with fiery sermons and political rallies. Her father, the Chicago-based temperance crusader and stump-speaker A. C. Rankin, had been born among the rolling fields of rural Pennsylvania in 1849 and, decades later, would draw his last breath in San Marino in May 1922. Alongside Caroline were her three sisters—Bertha Rankin Hummel, Lotta Rankin Jones, and Lois Rankin—four spirited branches on one outspoken family tree.
