Summary
Max, a boulevardier with Chaplinesque grace and the devil’s own timing, pirouettes through a gauntlet of slammed doors, jealous suitors, and a gorgon aunt who wields her lorgnette like a cavalry sabre. Every stratagem he devises—impersonation, bribery, even a canine co-conspirator—ricochets into farcical chaos, yet each pratfall tightens the tourniquet of his longing. Mary, half-flirt, half-sphinx, watches with eyes that flicker between pity and predation while Aunt Agatha’s empire of propriety crumbles under the weight of a single feather-trimmed hat. In the end, the film pirouettes on a wedding veil and a dog’s bark, leaving the audience gasping at how elegantly the noose of monogamy can resemble a halo.
