Biography

A midwinter baby, Charles Coleman first drew breath on 22 December 1885 amid the salt-sprayed streets of Sydney, New South Wales. Crossing the Pacific, he traded the Southern Cross for klieg lights, slipping into Hollywood’s early talkies with scene-stealing ease: he sparred with Fredric March in Merrily We Go to Hell (1932), lent plummy charm to Shirley Temple’s Poor Little Rich Girl (1936), and traded quips with Lloyd Nolan in Michael Shayne: Private Detective (1940). Off-screen, his heart belonged to Beatrice, his wife and steadfast partner through studio upheavals and reel changes alike. The curtain fell on 8 March 1951 in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, closing a life that had journeyed from Australian shores to the flickering dreamscapes of American cinema.
