Biography
Indianapolis delivered Fred Gamble to the world on 26 October 1868, and by the time the cameras began to roll he had already traded Midwestern streets for the flicker of silent-film sets. Audiences caught his shadow in the 1914 morality tale *The Only Way*, felt the dust of the frontier in 1925’s *Tonio, Son of the Sierras*, and laughed at the havoc he stirred in 1926’s *Chasing Trouble*. Seventy winters later, on 17 February 1939, the lights dimmed for good in Hollywood, California, closing the curtain on a journeyman who never needed words to make himself heard.
