The Red Mill

Set against a stylized, storybook version of Holland, The Red Mill follows Tina, a perpetually soot-covered tavern drudge who dreams of a life beyond scrubbing floors. When the local Burgomaster’s daughter, Gretchen, is forced into an unwanted engagement, Tina becomes the unlikely architect of a romantic rebellion. The two women engage in a series of increasingly frantic masquerades, involving disguises and physical deception, to secure the men they actually desire. It is a narrative built on the bones of Victor Herbert’s operetta, but stripped of its music and replaced with the high-octane physical comedy of the silent era. The film culminates in a chaotic, mechanically inventive climax involving the titular mill, proving that in the world of 1920s comedy, the path to true love is usually paved with pratfalls.
