Biography
Frederick Vroom first drew breath on 11 November 1857 amid the salt-sprayed hamlet of Clement, Nova Scotia. Decades later, moviegoers would recognize his hawk-like profile in Buster Keaton’s locomotive epic The General (1926), his comic foil aboard The Navigator (1924), and his suave turn in The Great Lover (1920). Behind the lens he also called the shots, directing as confidently as he acted. Off-screen, he shared life with his wife, Florence. On 24 June 1942, the lights dimmed for the last time in Hollywood, California, closing the curtain on a career that helped steer cinema’s early course.
