Biography
A Peckham boy, born 13 November 1846, Herbert Standing slipped onto the stage and, by 1916, had slipped in front of the camera three times—memorably so in *An International Marriage*, *David Garrick*, and *Madame la Presidente*. Between curtain calls he collected two surnames: first Janet Grace Dalghesh Riddell, later Emily Clementina Brown. The final curtain fell in Los Angeles on 5 December 1923, half a world away from the London streets where his story began.
