Summary

In the chiaroscuro of early-Hollywood morality, a vengeful groom shovels dung beneath chandeliers, nursing slights that fester like saddle sores until he steals the producer’s heir—a swaddled future—spiriting him into the fog of servitude. Years grind past: the child, rechristened Jit, learns the language of whips and whispers, his true pedigree buried under stable straw and lies. One moon-soaked night he bolts, colliding with a grizzled thespian whose breath smells of greasepaint and last chances; together they haunt boarding-house corridors, trading sonnets for bread crusts, until a casting call beckons. Under klieg lights that bleach pain into possibility, Jit’s raw gift detonates, luring the very magnate whose blood thrums in his veins. Synopsis

When Tony, an unscrupulous stable hand, is fired from his job, he decides to wreak vengeance upon his employer, theatrical producer Charles Suydam, by kidnapping Suydam's infant son Jit. After suffering years of abuse and overwork, Jit, who has been raised as Tony's son, decides to run away. He is befriended by Edward Brackett, an old actor who teaches the boy his craft. One day Jit reads for the juvenile lead in a play and, after many trials, is awarded the role. Charles Suydam, the manager of the company, recognizes Jit's talent and his long-lost son, and after many misfortunes the boy finally attains his birthright.
