Biography
On 29 October 1876, in the bustling Prussian river-port of Stettin—today the Polish city of Szczecin—Hugo Döblin drew his first breath. Over the next eight decades he built a life on the stage and screen, slipping into countless skins: the frazzled husband of *Er oder ich* (1930), the silver-tongued card-shark of *Gentlemen-Gauner* (1920), and the haunted bank clerk racing through *From Morning to Midnight* (1920). His final curtain fell in Zurich on 4 November 1960, leaving those flickering images to speak for him still.
