Biography
On a summer day in 1876—30 June, to be exact—Madison, Indiana welcomed John P. Wade into the world. The river town couldn’t guess that its native son would one day trade the Ohio’s steady current for flickering silver-screen light. Between 1918 and 1934 he stepped before the camera just often enough to leave a durable mark: as the tormented lover in *The Third Degree* (1919), the crusading hero of *Life’s Greatest Problem* (1918), and the unhinged scientist in the cult shocker *Maniac* (1934). Hollywood finally claimed him on 14 July 1949, closing the curtain on a life that spanned stagecoaches to soundstages.
