Born on 4 September 1850 amid the clang of Pittsburgh’s steel, Joseph J. Dowling stepped onto stages when gaslights still flickered and melodrama ruled. Four decades later, cameras—not footlights—caught his craggy authority: he barked orders in *The Yankee Way* (1917), battled the tide in *Sink or Swim* (1920), and embodied faith’s cost in *The Christian* (1923).
