Biography
Born Marguerite Clarice Marsh on April 18, 1888, in Lawrence, Kansas, Marguerite was the eldest of seven children. Following her father's death, her mother relocated the family to the burgeoning city of Los Angeles, California. After a brief stint as a nurse, Marguerite decided to trade the medical profession for the allure of the stage. Her personal life saw a significant turn in 1907 when she married Donald Loveridge and welcomed a daughter, Leslie. By 1911, Biograph studios had signed her, marking her cinematic debut in 'The Primal Call'. This dark-haired beauty frequently graced the screen in numerous short films, including 'A Siren Of Impulse', 'The Leading Man', and 'Too Many Maids', often credited under the stage name Marguerite Loveridge. Her marriage to Donald dissolved in 1913, and she subsequently began a romance with comedian Fred Mace. Concurrently, her younger sister, Mae Marsh, was rapidly ascending to stardom, and the two siblings shared the screen in 'Fields Of Honor'. Marguerite's relationship with Fred Mace concluded in 1916 after she declined his marriage proposal; tragically, he passed away just months later. She then secured leading roles in compelling dramas such as 'The Phantom Honeymoon' and 'The Eternal Magdalene'. Her career also featured an appearance alongside the legendary magician Harry Houdini in the 1918 serial 'The Master Mystery'. Beyond the camera, she found solace in reading and the intricate study of astrology. Despite appearing in over eighty movies, her fame never quite matched the meteoric success of her sister, Mae. Her final cinematic performance was in the 1923 British drama 'The Lion's Mouse'. The Fall of 1925 brought a severe nervous breakdown, leading her to seek refuge with her mother in New York City. On December 8, 1925, Marguerite's life was cut short by bronchial pneumonia at the tender age of thirty-seven. She was laid to rest at Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, New York.
