Biography
A thousand electric lights blinked to life on 21 March 1880 when Marie Shotwell first drew breath in Manhattan; the city itself seemed to rehearse for the roles she would one day play. Over the next five decades she slipped into other lives—warning mothers in *Enlighten Thy Daughter* (1917), solving séance-room murder in *The Thirteenth Chair* (1919), and trading jazz-age wisecracks in *Running Wild* (1927)—each performance a quiet revolution on the silent screen. The curtain finally fell on 18 September 1934 across the river in Long Island City, but the glow she left behind still flickers in the corners of every frame she ever touched.
