Biography
Santa Clara, California, greeted Milton Ross with winter air on 2 December 1872, and by the time the new century rolled around he had traded quiet orchards for the flicker of klieg lights. Moviegoers still flinch at his chilly surgeon in *The Penalty* (1920), sigh over his weather-beaten charm in *Salomy Jane* (1923), and tip their hats to his steadfast foreman in *The Virginian* (1923). Nearly four decades after that first California sunrise, the lights dimmed: Ross died in Los Angeles on 6 September 1941, leaving behind three performances that refuse to stay trapped in silent celluloid.
