Summary
Billy Barnes, silk-scion of a monopolist dynasty, weaponizes a harmless divot into a country-club coup de théâtre—his mashie niblick sends a magistrate’s toupee skyward, and the ensuing scandal ricochets through the mahogany corridors of power until the same velvet ropes that once saluted him snap shut around his wrists. Behind iron portals he exchanges his Oxford spats for a numbered smock, sharing a dungeon dusk with a languid jewel virtuoso whose fingers once danced across the tiaras of Europe. Together they orchestrate a pas de deux of contraband and contrition: a salt-of-the-earth trust-fund baby learning larceny’s lexicon while the pickpocket absorbs remorse like absinthe through cracked crystal. Their caper—equal parts morality fable and champagne heist—detonates across ballrooms, courtrooms, and smoke-wreathed speakeasies, until the final cut reveals that redemption, like a diamond, is only ever refracted guilt.
Synopsis
Billy Barnes gets into trouble over a practical joke on a golf course and ends up in jail, despite his high social standing. But he manages to redeem himself with the help of a jewel thief he befriends in jail.
