By 1915 he was pacing the flickering sets of Griffith’s The Birth of a Nation and prowling the shadows of The Wolf Man, cementing a screen presence that felt carved from oak. Twelve years later he swapped locomotive sweat for silent-era swagger, stepping into the title role of Casey Jones. Off-camera, he shared his life with fellow performer Vera Lewis.
